Fitzgerald is a ballhawking rookie who landed in exactly the right spot: Detroit's top two safeties, Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, have both been out, and Maddox's injury opened another hole behind Chuck Clark. His college tape, including five interceptions at USC, is why the Lions moved quickly to pry him off Pittsburgh's practice squad rather than leaving him on the open market.
Strengths: Ball skills that produced five interceptions and All-American recognition in his final college season at USC.
Weaknesses: Still a true rookie with no regular-season NFL snaps and needs to prove his college range translates against NFL speed.
