Marcus Mariota Scouting Report (3)
Mariota might be the best backup quarterback in football—and Washington doesn't have to completely change its offense when he plays.
Mariota gives Washington a seasoned emergency option who can still move the pocket and keep an offense organized. He had to play a lot last year, which showed both his usefulness and why the club hopes he is mostly mentoring this season. The MCL recovery is the immediate watch item.
Strengths: Experienced starter, athletic escape ability, efficient short-game distributor, and respected quarterback-room leadership.
Weaknesses: His availability after the MCL sprain bears watching, and extended starting stretches have brought more volatility than his best earlier-career seasons.
