Tonges quietly became a really useful player last year. He entered the season without an NFL catch, then finished with 34 receptions, 293 yards and five touchdowns. He was not ripping off huge plays, but he gave the quarterbacks a reliable target underneath and found space near the goal line. He also caught six more passes in the playoffs, so the regular season was not a total fluke. At 240 pounds he is more of a move tight end than a people-moving blocker, and that keeps him from being a complete number one. As Kittle's backup, though, a six feels right. The offense knows it can actually throw him the ball.
Strengths: Tonges has reliable hands, understands spacing and made himself useful in the red zone. He can move around the formation, contribute on special teams and settle into the open area quickly enough to give the quarterback a safe answer.
Weaknesses: He is not a dominant in-line blocker and does not have the speed to consistently threaten defenses deep. His 8.6 yards per catch reflects a mostly underneath role, and he still needs to prove the five-touchdown breakout carries over once defenses have more tape.
