Malik Muhammad Scouting Report (3)
Muhammad has the traits corner coaches want to mold: speed, length and confidence in man coverage. The early test is learning NFL route detail without losing the aggressive instincts that got him drafted.
Strengths: Speed, length, man coverage, zone instincts and college starting experience.
Weaknesses: Rookie technique and strength will be tested by NFL receivers and route combinations.
Muhammad has a real chance to become a value pick. He played a lot of football at Texas, has 4.42 speed and did not merely survive in the SEC—he made plays on the ball. Chicago can bring him along behind veterans rather than rush him into a bad matchup. I put him at a six because the coverage temperament and athletic tools are exciting, but a fourth-round rookie still has to prove he can translate his eye discipline and physicality to NFL route trees.
Strengths: He has NFL-caliber speed, length and experience finding the football in high-level college coverage. Muhammad plays with confidence, has starting experience inside a demanding program and can contest throws without waiting for the receiver to secure them.
Weaknesses: He is thin at 182 pounds and can be challenged by stronger pro receivers in the run game and at the catch point. As a rookie, he must adjust to disguised NFL concepts and avoid relying on athletic recovery after early mistakes.
