Brendel is not the biggest name on the line, but there is a reason he keeps holding onto the center job. He knows the offense, gets everyone pointed the right way and moves well enough to reach defenders in the 49ers' zone-running game. He started 15 games last season after starting all 17 in each of the previous three years, so the line knows what it is getting from him. Bigger defensive tackles can still walk him back when they catch him alone, and he is more steady than dominant. For me, he is a solid six: a useful starter whose communication matters even when it does not show up in a box score.
Strengths: His best traits are awareness, communication and movement. Brendel handles protection calls, works well on combination blocks and has the quickness to get across a defender's face or climb to a linebacker. Years in the same system also help him keep the offense organized when the picture changes before the snap.
Weaknesses: Power is the matchup to watch. He can lose ground against heavier nose tackles when he cannot get help, and once his base gets narrowed it is hard for him to reset the pocket. At 33, the team also has to consider whether the missed time in 2025 was an isolated issue or the start of more availability concerns.
