Montez Sweat Scouting Report (4)
2 sacks, bears are 2-1 but he's not dominating. fine, steady edge guy.
Sweat is the engine of Chicago's rush. He has the length and burst to win clean, but the more valuable development is that he now affects every kind of offensive play.
Strengths: Double-digit sack production, length, run defense, forced-fumble impact, high snap tolerance and leadership.
Weaknesses: He still sees constant extra attention, so the next step is converting even more pressures when offenses chip and slide protection.
Sweat is the engine of this pass rush. Ten sacks, 13 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles last year came with the kind of length and power that make protection calls revolve around him. He has started every game of his career, which is rare for an edge player taking that many hits. I have him at a nine. He can sometimes get a little direct when elite tackles set hard on the speed rush, but he is a true number-one edge who changes the front.
Strengths: Sweat combines elite length, first-step speed and power conversion. He can win wide, long-arm a tackle into the pocket, set a physical edge and consistently create strip-sack opportunities without needing a manufactured free run.
Weaknesses: His rush can become linear against the league's best pass protectors, who force him to counter inside more often. The recent illness was resolved, but it is reasonable to monitor his early conditioning and snap load.
