Trent Williams Scouting Report (2)
Trent is still the guy who makes the whole offensive line feel better. The 49ers can leave him alone against a top pass rusher, pull him out in front of a run or ask him to make a block in space that most tackles his size should not be able to make. The All-Pro and All-NFC honors last season show this is not just about his reputation—he is still playing at a really high level. His hands are incredibly strong, and even when a rusher gets an early advantage, Trent usually has the balance to recover. The obvious concern is that he is 38 and has missed time in recent seasons. When he is out there, I still trust him against just about anyone. The question is how often the team can keep him out there.
Strengths: Williams combines explosive first-step quickness, flexible hips and exceptional play strength. He can widen the edge in outside zone, reach defenders who appear to have leverage and absorb power rushes without surrendering the depth of the pocket. His independent hands and ability to reset after initial contact remain unusually advanced.
Weaknesses: Age and availability are the meaningful weaknesses, not a glaring technical defect. Recovery between games and handling a full season's workload are increasingly relevant, and occasional oversets can create an inside counter when he hunts the edge rusher too aggressively. The offense also feels his absence more sharply than it would for a typical lineman.
